Postpartum Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD)

Perinatal and Postpartum Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD) are a mental disorder affecting approximately 5% women and/or men during and after pregnancy. Because many symptoms are also common behaviors, OCD is the most misunderstood and misdiagnosed PMAD. What differentiates the behaviors from normal is that the symptoms are repetitive, unwanted, extreme and interfere with daily living.

COMMON SYMPTOMS:

  • Persistent, repetitive and unwanted obsessions (intrusive thoughts or mental images) often related to the baby
  • An understanding that their obsessions are abnormal and they are unlikely to act out their thoughts
  • Compulsive behaviors that are intended to reduce obsessions and fear (examples: constant checking that baby is sleeping safely; avoiding high stair cases)
  • Hypervigilance and overprotection of the baby
  • Obsessions lead to horror and extreme fear
  • Extreme or excessive fear of being alone with baby

Those suffering are highly likely to avoid triggers, places, or situations that may exacerbate these symptoms. This puts them at a low risk of acting out their thoughts.

RISK FACTORS:

  • A personal or family history of Anxiety, PMADs or OCD is the most common risk factor

It is imperative partners, loved ones and providers understand that OCD is Not psychosis. The Wilderman Fund’s support for educating Emergency and Psychiatric Staff about OCD can greatly improve the ability to properly diagnose and effectively treat these patients. This leads to a more accurate diagnosis and ensures a better outcome for patients, their babies and families.
